Constipation (Obstipation)

Encountering difficulties when having a bowel movement can lead to constipation-related conditions. Some of the common causes of constipation are:

  • Unsuitable or incorrect diet.
  • Lack of exercise.
  • Suppressing expelling of faeces on account of, for example, being on bus or in a school lesson.
  • Some psychical or typical characteristics, such as bitterness, phlegmatism, thriftiness, painful perfectionism, depression etc.
  • Frequent use of purgatives, which depletes the levels of calcium in the body and can give rise to lethargy, weakness and insensitivity of the intestines. A consequence of constipation can be diverticular disease (when small pouches called diverticula develop in the wall of the colon/large intestine), which in turn can lead to inflammation, haemorrhaging or even cancer of the colon/large intestine.
  • Other reasons.

Donat Mg acts as a naturally osmotic purgative, on account of its hyperosmolar agents. Specifically it works in this way because it contains magnesium sulphate (bitter salt), sodium sulphate (Glauber's salt) and magnesium. By the process of osmosis, Donat Mg extracts water from the cells of the intestinal wall and so the content mass in the intestines increases by up to 3-5 times, which in itself causes the contents to press on the intestinal wall and provoke peristalsis, ie movement. Magnesium alone still further stimulates intestinal hormones, which strengthens the peristaltic process.

Donat Mg is also successfully used for preparing patients for a colonoscopy or irrigation treatment and for cleaning the bowel prior to undergoing an operation.

Why do we recommend Donat Mg?

  • The body does not get use to it, which is to say it does not have any addictive qualities.
  • It is always effective.
  • It is a natural purgative and has no side effects.

A possible side effect:

  • If too much of the mineral water is drunk, diarrhoea can occur. But this automatically stops when the intake of water stops.

How should we drink Donat Mg if constipated?
Half a litre or more of Donat Mg should be drunk in the morning on an empty stomach. The water should be 30-37oC or at room temperature. It is important that the mineral water is drunk all at once, or as quickly as is feasible to do so. In this way, spontaneous purgation is provoked. Additionally, we can drink 2-5 dcl in the evening before going to sleep.

Do not drink chilled Donat Mg from the fridge.

IMPORTANT GUIDELINE: During the process of warming up to the temperature of the body, Donat Mg loses its carbon dioxide, which means it degasifies. Therefore, it always needs to be drunk from warm. You can also degasify the mineral water if you leave it in a glass at room temperature and frequently stir it.
