Diet and Weight Loss

A healthy and balanced diet preserves both physical and mental health and helps maintain our vitality into old age. Such a diet contains energy producing (proteins, carbon hydrates, fats) and non-energy producing (mineral, vitamins, fibre) substances in quantities and proportions sufficient for the normal operation of all the body's functions.

Research has shown that Slovenians do not tend to have good eating habits. Their food contains too much fat, is too salty and also does not contain sufficient grain, vegetables or fruit. Also, too much alcohol is consumed. The diet also contains too much white bread and fatty meat, which is usually prepared by either frying or roasting. In addition to which breakfast is often skipped. The majority of Slovenians do not eat enough fresh vegetables and 10% of the population do not eat vegetables at all. The consequences of this type of diet, in conjunction with insufficient physical activity, are being overweight and a predisposition towards the onset of atherosclerosis, diabetes and cancer. More than 50% of Slovenians are overweight.

We usually undertake the process of losing weight on our own, although very often it is unsuccessful in that, despite the huge efforts, the lost kilograms are quickly regained.

Good weight loss programs are based on the following:

  • The correct choice and preparation of foodstuffs.
  • Taking care with regard to the regular elimination of faeces.
  • Its important that we change our eating habits.
  • Increasing physical activity.

Drinking water is very important when losing weight. Fats and proteins are broken down in acid during digestion, and minerals are also lost. Donat Mg maintains the PH balance of the forming acids, replaces lost minerals and at the same time accelerates the elimination of waste products (ie urine and faeces). During the weight reduction course of treatments at Roga¹ka Slatina, it is recommended to drink more than one litre of Donat Mg a day. Upon returning home, Donat Mg should continue to be drunk but in smaller quantities, and any necessary diet changes should be put in place.

Part of the weight loss program concentrates on physical activity, which improves the body's efficiency, increases muscle mass, regulates blood pressure, lowers lipid and glucose levels and promotes a sense of well-being and optimism. The intensity and duration of any physical activity to be undertaken is determined by a doctor following a check-up and examination.
